Please choose one topic that you generated on your reading quiz IN CLASS today on the short story entitled, "The Necklace," to develop into a paragraph response. Most of you were able to at least get to start this in class on Wednesday. If you were not in class on Wednesday, please write one paragraph (5-8 sentences) where you argue what you felt like was the biggest climax in the short story, "The Necklace." Please use ONE quotation from the story as evidence and be sure to explain how the quotation is climactic. Do not work more than 30 minutes on this paragraph.

This weekend, I would like you to spend no more than a half hour reveiwing the literary terms packet that we have been using as our foundation. Please review the major literary devices and their smaller components in your packet. On Monday, I will give you a small paragraph (a VERY SHORT STORY!) and ask you to evaluate some of the literary elements in this paragraph. Be sure to write the sentence that you are close reading at the top of your paper, so that I can easily follow your paragraph, and also be sure to actually CLOSE READ your sentence on the physical paper.

NOT Wednesday): 1) Read, actively, chapter four. 2) Select any paragraph that you wish from chapter four and CLOSELY READ IT (mark important diction, imagery, characterization, juxtaposition, figurative language, etc.). 3) Write one paragraph (7 to 10 sentences) in which you argue what the point of your selected paragraph is; why did Fitzgerald write it? What was he intending to acheive? What is the effect of your paragraph? Be sure to create a solid topic sentence before arguing, and be sure to support your claim with evidence (quotes). Even one or two words quotations can be very helpful.

Then, in an organized paragraph, please construct and defend with evidence a topic sentence which clearly states what the main message or theme of this poem is. In your pargarph, you should use a minimum of three literary devices and quotations as evidence (you should already have these marked out on paper from your teamwork on Friday). Be sure to introduce each quotation by explaining what type of literary device it is, and explain how it proves your thesis after you give the quotation. Don't forget to double-space and include the proper heading. *do not spend longer than 40 minutes on this activity.

Homework Due Wednesday

7/8th: Please read "Pigs, Sheeps and Wolves" and complete the worksheet regarding the poem that I handed out in class on Monday.

9/10th: Please CAREFULLY scan Shakespeares's SOnnet 116, marking stressed and unstressed syllables. ALSO- take advantage of this "light" homework night and use this time to revise your exam essay which is due on Friday (TYPED!).

Homework Due Monday

7/8th AND 9/10th: Please answer the appropriate questions (FOR YOUR GRADE) on the poems, "Those Winter Sundays," and "We Real Cool" on the worksheet I handed out in class on Friday. You do not need to write in complete sentences, but please be complete in your response. The two poems can be found in the "TONE" poetry packet that I handed out in class on Friday. In your responses, please remember our discussions this week of Speaker, Tone and Poetic Sounds.

Homework due Friday

7/8th: Both sides of the poetry sheet need to be completed. I realize that some of the poetry definitions are not as easily straightforward as they should be, although I realized this after class of course. Therefore, please don't hesitate to look for more simplistic definitions on line, or email me, or come by class and ask me).

9/10th: 1) Please remember that your EXAM ESSAY REVISIONS are due NEXT Friday, Jan. 15th, typed, with the orriginal attached. I have met with several of those of you who wanted to meet with me-- if you would still like to meet with me and discuss these essays, please do so sometime in the next week. 2) The poetry work sheet (both sides) are due this Friday.
